In 2007 scientists declared that they are creating life. Is it hype or truth? Now in 2010, scientists are examining the facts and finding mainly hype but there is progress in modifying living systems which is called synthetic biology. But have scientists really created life?
Where there’s smoke there’s fire. Where there’s methane there’s life? Scientists find that much of the methane (one carbon atom connected to four hydrogen atoms) in our atmosphere is produced by microbes. Now NASA scientists find methane on Mars and the amounts are changing suggesting that microbes might be producing it. Although there are also other possible explanations for the release of methane other than life, the findings are tantilizing.
Many of you have heard me state that psychiatry is too focused on drugs. The most recent family of drugs are the so-called selective serotonin uptake inhibitors or SSRI antidepressants. But what about psychologists and their use of the mind or “cognitive” therapy?
According to Nobelist Eric Kandel, a neuroscientist at Columbia University, as reported by Science “cognitive behavioral therapy is as good if not better than selective serotonin uptake inhibitors in moderate depression.” Since many mental disorders such as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and depression have physical abnormalities in the brain, mind over matter exists! Mind can and does rewire the brain. It also changes our bodies and can lead to health or illness.

I heard of Chinese of long ago paying their medicine man when they were healthy and stopped paying when they were sick. I don’t know if this is true, but we Americans do the opposite. Amazingly, even with the most feared diseases like cancer, we seem to ignore prevention and wait until we get it and complain when there is no cure!
We are far from having magic bullets to cure cancer, but yet we are ignoring medicines which prevent two of the most devastating cancers–breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Want to push an emotional button? How about just the mention of creationism? Or Islam? Or Evolution? Or Fundamental Christianity? So I want to really push your buttons by discussing all of them plus throwing in “religion.”
