Cosmic melodies

What is it about music that we enjoy? Why does it affect us? Scientists are mystified. Music is but air vibrations created from tremors. Dolphins and whales hear water disturbances. Pulsating and oscillating waves are not limited to air, water, or even Earth. Atmospheric features of Saturn resemble Earth’s, and, according to Timothy E. Dowling planetologist at the University of Louisville, “is like a complicated sound box attached to an elaborate musical instrument.” (more…)

Can evolution explain life?

Biologist Richard Dawkins claims that God is a delusion and that evolution and science explain life. Evolutionary scientists look to DNA to explain how organisms’ genes mutated and evolved. My 50 trillion cells would yield enough DNA to stretch to the moon and back 250,000 times. Yet, genes comprise only 1.5% of my DNA. At a cost of several billion dollars, the human genome has been sequenced. Imagine a million pages with 3,000 letters (combinations of ATCG) on them. So what did the scientist find? Do these genes really define me? No. (more…)

The receiver on your shoulders

Ever wake up at 4 am from a sound sleep with an insight that resolves a critical problem? Ever forget a name until you stop trying to remember it? What is the explanation? Our brains are more than three pound computers generating thought and retrieving memories. They receive and translate the echoes of the universe which bombards us. (more…)

Dawkins: The God delusion

Professor Richard Dawkins is a British biologist whose scientific contributions I respect. His recent book asserts that God is a delusion. Carl Sagan believed that extraordinary claims require extraordinary data. Dawkins’ book has no such data and devotes only one chapter of ten to “why there almost certainly is no God” amounting to only 12% of the pages. I find that most of that chapter does not deal with the chapter’s title. Dawkins criticizes those who use the word “God” in a non-theist manner-including numerous renowned scientists such as Einstein. (more…)

Debunking Materialism: Mind over matter

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

The dogma held by most scientists until the 1990’s was that after adolescence the brain cannot be significantly changed. Today this doctrine is buried in the cemetery of scientific dogma. Also dead, but not buried, is materialism. (more…)
