Mind is Superior to Drugs!

Monday, December 28th, 2009

kandel

Many of you have heard me state that psychiatry is too focused on drugs. The most recent family of drugs are the so-called selective serotonin uptake inhibitors or SSRI antidepressants. But what about psychologists and their use of the mind or “cognitive” therapy?

According to Nobelist Eric Kandel, a neuroscientist at Columbia University, as reported by Science “cognitive behavioral therapy is as good if not better than selective serotonin uptake inhibitors in moderate depression.” Since many mental disorders such as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and depression have physical abnormalities in the brain, mind over matter exists! Mind can and does rewire the brain. It also changes our bodies and can lead to health or illness.

A Mind with No Brain?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

nerve-cellsNerve cells make up the brain. Whether a lowly worm has a brain can be debated but they have a few hundred nerve cells, while a fly has 100,000 campared to a human’s 100,000,000,000. But are any of these necessary to make decisions? If not then mind (if mind is the one making decisions) doesn’t depend on brain or even nerve cells. The latest scientific findings show that single cell creatures such as bacteria and yeast are making such decisions!
